Sarah Staar IM Newsletter – Cold Wet and Windy

No no……. that’s not me that’s windy !!

I am spending Christmas in a house up in Northumbria, near to relatives of my sister’s husband. The house is in a National Park where everything is strictly controlled to keep modern civilisation from spoiling the historic beauty of the land.

sarahonhill

Not far from here is Hadrian’s Wall, built by the Emperor Hadrian in the 2nd Century AD to mark what was effectively the northern limit of the Roman Empire. (1800 years ago and it’s still standing – they don’t build them like that anymore !)

So this morning we went for a family walk amongst the hills, moorland, and forests of the area. The temperature here is about + 4C / 40F. The wind is about 20 miles per hour.

And then it started raining……. Fortunately, some among us decided to turn back early and got the fire going, so when the rest of the party arrived back soaking wet the house was reasonably warm.

I can see why the Romans invented hypocausts and underfloor central heating. Nevertheless I can understand why the Romans didn’t hang around here for long……

Getting away from Modern Technology

I am quite comfortable with modern technology, but I use it rather than have it use me, if you see what I mean.

Certainly what is going on in Facebook is something I stay clear of, and I don’t need to chase attention or “likes”.

And email…… well I use it for business but again I don’t feel the need to be in 24 hour contact with it either to run my business or keep in contact with stuff.

I mean, like, what is really important ?? And do I have to respond right now ?? And sometimes I think that mobile phones, the internet, gmail, and Facebook are more curses than blessings because they are just so intrusive and create that “knee jerk” response.

Dave is of a similar view and is trying to keep the technology in France unobtrusive. Now the house we are staying at has no internet access at all.

It sits in a fold in the ground and consequently there is no mobile phone signal. There is no wi-fi. There are no outdoor lights (apparently because in a National Park light pollution is a big No No)

Then I spotted that the owners house has 2 way satellite broadband, identical to the system we have in France. I chatted to one of the owners and asked if they had thought about offering broadband and wi-fi as an upsell.

From their reaction you would have thought I was proposing building a nuclear reactor next door !!

=======

Angela and Kathy on my support team have created and launched their first product called “AdSense HQ” (round of applause for them please !!)

Adsense is where you put Google adverts on your site and you get paid by Google. It works well where you have a niche of customers and you build sites to match.

It’s more of what I call a hobby income, but it does have the virtue of being “fire and forget ” You do the work once to build and market the site and continue to get paid week after week for years to come.

I have a few sites I built way back before I got into internet marketing properly and they still generate me a bit of money each month.

So if you are looking for something to do this Christmas then check this out Adsense HQ

Sarah Staar IM Newsletter – The 7K dyslexic Mistake

post box

Okay, so I was at an Internet marketing event a couple of months ago and I got chatting to Neil Stafford. He told me about a cool strategy, promoting webinars using direct mail, you know “snail mail”, old fashioned paper post…

I thought to myself okay I am definitely going to try this, sometime….

Because……

Email open rates are pretty low

A one-pager letter  is more personal

You can reach people who may have “switched off” from emails

A couple of weeks later I was brainstorming ways to get more traffic to my new squeeze page promoting my next webinar.

The next morning (Friday) I phoned up  the direct mail company, they told me it was definitely possible to get a direct mail sales letter out and have it delivered to people’s houses by Monday or Tuesday.

Deadlines were tight BUT if I could get the letter to them within the next couple of hours they could guarantee the delivery in time for my webinar.

I put the phone down grabbed my direct marketing box file, full of marketing letters from other internet marketers, and ran downstairs.

I just dumped the contents on the living room floor and started analysing what other marketers were doing with direct mail. After about an hour or two I had a clear idea in my mind of what I was going to talk about in my sales letter.

I quickly put together a one page sales letter, printed it out, and sort of proofread it.

Okay I must admit I proofread it about as good as a dyslexic person can !

I sent it over to the mail house along with an Excel spreadsheet of names and addresses of 600 of my customers, and paid them £271.

Phew !!!   I just about made it in time……

Okay now here’s the funny part…..

I get a Skype message on Tuesday morning from one of my team, Catherine. (I  had put her name on the list as a seed name to check the mailing and timing)

She told me I had made a big error in the headline.

It was meant to say how to make £1K per day……… instead it said how to make £1 per day!!!!

Now the interesting part is I was tracking all of the traffic that was coming from the direct mail piece.

I have just looked at my numbers.

Now bearing in mind all the sales aren’t all in yet, but it looks like we’ve made over $7000 so far just from the direct mail traffic.

Now that’s not a bad return, considering I only spent £270 on the traffic!!

And the point is….

It’s better to do something badly, than not do something at all!

I think I will try a bit more of this direct-mail stuff…… I will keep you informed of what happens. I think next time I will get someone else to write the sales letter!!! (Dave ??!!)

Christmas Affiliate marketing

Quite a few people think that Christmas is not a good time to promote Internet Marketing products – especially of the knowledge based sort.

However if you are a regular reader of this newsletter you will know that my experience is exactly the opposite !

In fact, one of the best times to promote offers is when people have had enough of the food (and maybe the annoying friends or family) and they are thinking about What Xmas has cost them.

What they are going to do different in their lives next year.

So why not get into Affiliate marketing with Affiliate Formula X:-)

You will find at least one way you can recoup the cost of Christmas…

And it’s going to be more entertaining.

And it’s going to help you start the New Year with a bang !

Sarah Staar IM Newsletter – I Made Everybody Laugh

Last week I attended a driver’s awareness course. This was because I got caught speeding and was given the choice to either have some points put on my licence or attend a one-day driver awareness course.

The course was held in a local Hilton hotel in one of their conference rooms.

The setup looked very familiar, a bit like an Internet marketing workshop!

It was actually great fun, got to do a bit of public speaking!! and I got chatting to loads of people at the event.

The course consisted of a PowerPoint presentation  which was actually very well put together. And then group discussions about what had just been covered in the presentation.

Each table had to have a spokesperson, at the end of each section that person would tell the rest of the group what conclusions their table had come up with.

My table was first…..

I stood up and walked to the front of the room and started presenting, a bit like I was at an Internet marketing event.

I think this made the organisers of the event a little bit surprised.

Then everybody else  from the other tables felt like they had to do the same….. The organisers told me this is the first time that had ever happened.

laughI did make everybody laugh at one point.

At the end of the day they asked for 3 volunteers  to stand up and explain how they were going to  remember to stick to the speed limit.

One of my answers was, I’ve ordered a brand-new self-driving car, and my car will not drive over the speed limit  because it’s driving itself. Of course I was referring to my Tesla.

Everybody thought this was hilarious, and the course organisers were a little taken back….

It never rains but it pours…..

A couple of weeks ago I was at Ben Father’s workshop and got chatting to Neil Stafford.

Neil explained how he was using direct mail to promote his webinars. I told Neil that I would definitely  try his strategy out  with my next webinar.

So last week I decided to take the plunge  and do my first ever piece of direct mail  to promote a webinar.

Now I say direct mail, what I am talking about is old-fashioned paper post, remember that???

Last Friday  I put together a one page sales letter saved it as a word document and sent it over to a company which I found called Stannp.

The letter, which is advertising my webinar, was sent out to a small segment of my UK list.

This is really just a test to see how many webinar signups I can get from a piece of direct mail.

Problem number 1

This morning at 7am I had an email from one of my customers saying that he’d received my sales letter and he tried to go to the website address but it had not worked?

The website address he was going to was…..     www. sarahsystem .com

I have to say was a bit baffled because I had tested the link and it was working the day before?

I had a quick look in my web browser and typed in the link sarahsystem .com and it was working fine.

It turned out that I hadn’t done the domain name redirect correctly.

If you typed in www in front of the domain name it did not work!!!

After frantically messing around inside the Namecheap control panel I finally worked out what I had done wrong.

You see Namecheap has recently changed the way it uses redirects and I wasn’t familiar with how things worked.

Anyway  it’s all working now it just goes to show that you need to check double check and triple check!!!

Problem number 2

I spent this afternoon in Chichester doing some shopping, I got home at about 3.30pm and noticed a problem with my Leadpages account.

It turned out  that one of my squeeze pages wasn’t working correctly, Leadpages actually informed me that it was a problem on their end!!!

Lucky for me I’ve also got an account with Clickfunnels,  I got Angela from my team to duplicate the pages which had problems inside Clickfunnels. Luckily we managed to do this all within  20 minutes.

It just goes to show that having  an outsourcing team to hand  can sometimes get problems cleared up really quickly.

Let’s hope there isn’t a problem number 3 later today…
